After spending a lovely Saturday morning perusing canino's for fresh fruits and veggies we headed over to our favorite mexican bakery, El Bollio. After loading up our trays with various, and too many, delights Mike walked straight to the beverage cooler. We are not big soda drinkers and you will never see me in line at the grocery store with the sugary drinks in my cart, but these are MEXICAN COCA COLA'S! What's the difference? Well! Mexican cokes come in beaten up glass bottles and are made with SUGAR, thats right, no corn syrup here! Don't get me wrong, I love popsicles, candy and pretty much all things sweet. The real problem I have with all of these items is the fact that they employ corn syrup, not sugar, as a sweetener. Keep in mind that sugar is cheaper to produce, process, and package that corn syrup. Why then, you might be wondering, is everything in the good 'ole United States made with corn syrup? Easy, governemnt corn subsidies. Without these payments to farmers (from your tax dollars) corn would cost more to produce than it is worth- unfortunately farmers are wise to this and grow ridiculous amounts of corn that we cannot use, hence the development of corn syrup. Corn syrup is cheaper becuase you and I are already footing half the tab to pay for its production- feels good doesn't it? Now there is a full blown campaign with commercials and everything to try and convince the American people that corn syrup is the same as sugar! I dont buy it, making corn syrup is way more involved, simple is better. Try a mexican coke if you find one and see if you agree, I think you will like the lack of wierd sticky throut feeling after drinking one :)
